What Is PTSD?

What is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or (PTSD) is a real illness that can occur following the experience or witnessing of a traumatic event. It is the brain’s natural biochemical reaction to an abnormally stressful situation (or series of stressful situations). The greater the stress, the larger and more likely reaction in the brain and the longer the side-effects of those reactions without help. You cannot just pull yourself together and get over the traumatic event.

 What Causes PTSD?

PTSD can occur after someone goes through, sees, or learns about a traumatic event like:

War

Death

Abuse

Neglect

Bombing

Car Crash

Kidnapping

Plane Crash

Rape/Assault

Natural Disaster

Terrorist Attacks

Being Held Hostage

Seeing Loved One Hurt

Sudden Loss of Loved One

Severe threat to your life

Remember most people who go through a trauma have some symptoms at the beginning, but they will start to fade. So next we will look at how prevalent PTSD is in the military.
